Sub-bottom Profiling Survey A sub-bottom profiling survey uses low-frequency acoustic pulses to image and characterize sediment and rock layers beneath the seafloor. By analyzing the time it takes for sound to penetrate subsurface strata and return to the receiver, hydrographers generate vertical cross-sections that reveal buried features, sediment thickness, and subsurface geology.
What Is a Sub-bottom Profiler?
A sub-bottom profiler is a sonar-based geophysical tool mounted on a vessel hull or towed behind a survey ship. It emits low-frequency pulses that penetrate the seafloor, reflect off sedimentary horizons, and return to a hydrophone array. The depth of penetration and resolution depend on pulse power, frequency, sediment type, and sea conditions. Sub-bottom profiling functions much like ground-penetrating radar (GPR) or seismic reflection surveys on land. An acoustic pulse travels downward, reflects at interfaces where material properties change, and returns to the receiver. Processing these reflections along survey lines yields a geophysical cross-section of subsurface layers.
System Types
1. Pinger
• Frequency: 2–20 kHz; high resolution, shallow penetration (tens of meters).
2. Chirp
• Frequency band: 2–15 kHz; uses a sweep of frequencies to balance penetration (20–50 m) and resolution.
3. Boomer
• Frequency: 500 Hz–5 kHz; penetrates deepest (up to ~100 m) with lower resolution.
Comparison with GPR Sub-bottom profilers function like ground-penetrating radar surveys but use acoustic energy in water rather than electromagnetic pulses on land. Acoustic waves penetrate deeper in marine environments and are less attenuated by water, enabling imaging of buried features that GPR cannot resolve underwater.
Survey Workflow
• Mount the profiler on a vessel hull or rig a towfish.
• Plan survey lines based on target size and seabed complexity.
• Collect data along predefined transects, recording travel times and amplitudes.
• Calibrate for sound speed, sea state, and sediment properties.
• Perform real-time quality control to ensure penetration and signal clarity.

Data Processing and Interpretation:
After acquisition convert travel times into depth profiles using calibrated sound-speed models. Generate vertical cross-sections that reveal sedimentary layering, buried channels, ancient shorelines, and geohazards. Integrate with multibeam bathymetry, backscatter data, and physical samples for comprehensive seafloor characterization.
Applications
- Offshore wind farm and pipeline route planning by energy and telecom sectors.
- Engineering and dredging projects requiring sediment thickness and stratigraphy.
- Geological research identifying buried riverbeds, fault zones, and gas anomalies.
- Habitat assessments and archaeological surveys of submerged cultural features.
- Geohazard evaluations for landslides, slope stability, and foundation design.
